Pizza is a beloved dish worldwide, cherished for its versatility and deliciousness. Whether you prefer a classic Margherita or a gourmet creation with exotic toppings, pizza has a way of bringing people together. On Mother's Day weekend, I decided to celebrate by creating a pizza that not only reflects my love for this Italian classic but also pays homage to my Indian roots. Here's a detailed recipe and story of my unique Indian-style pizza, made with love and a touch of tradition.

The Inspiration

Pizza is universally adored, a fast food that transcends borders. Its many versions range from the authentic Neapolitan to the creative Californian. However, I wanted to bring something different to the table—a pizza that blends the best of both worlds: the beloved elements of a traditional pizza and the rich, vibrant flavors of Indian cuisine.

The Base: A Healthy Twist

The foundation of any great pizza is its base. For my Indian-style pizza, I opted for a healthier approach by using organic flour. To make the base fluffy and delicious, I incorporated ingredients like curd and honey. This not only adds a slight sweetness but also ensures the dough rises beautifully, resulting in a soft and airy crust.

Ingredients for the Base:

  • 2 cups organic all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup warm water

  • 1/4 cup curd (yogurt)

  • 1 tablespoon honey

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, curd, honey, and olive oil.

  3. Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic.

  4. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until it has doubled in size.

  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface to your desired thickness.

The Sauce: A Flavorful Indian Twist

Instead of the traditional tomato sauce, I decided to use a rich and creamy Indian Makhani gravy. Made from scratch, this sauce adds a depth of flavor that perfectly complements the toppings.

Ingredients for the Makhani Sauce:

  • 2 large tomatoes, chopped

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 inch ginger, grated

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

  • 1 teaspoon garam masala

  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder

  • Salt to taste

  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Heat butter in a pan and add cumin seeds until they crackle.

  2. Add onions, garlic, and ginger, sautéing until golden brown.

  3. Add the tomatoes and cook until they are soft and the oil begins to separate.

  4. Stir in the spices (garam masala, turmeric, and red chili powder) and cook for another 2-3 minutes.

  5. Add the heavy cream and simmer the sauce for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

  6. Blend the sauce until smooth and set aside.

The Toppings: Fresh and Flavorful

For the toppings, I chose fresh vegetables, colorful peppers, and Indian cottage cheese (paneer). These ingredients not only add a burst of color but also provide a variety of textures and flavors that make each bite exciting.

Ingredients for the Toppings:

  • 1 cup paneer, cubed

  • 1/2 cup bell peppers (red, yellow, and green), sliced

  • 1/2 cup onions, sliced

  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved

  • 1/4 cup black olives, sliced (optional)

  • Fresh basil leaves

  • Shredded mozzarella cheese

  • Olive oil for drizzling

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C).

  2. Spread the Makhani sauce evenly over the rolled-out pizza dough.

  3. Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce.

  4. Arrange the paneer cubes, bell peppers, onions, cherry tomatoes, and olives evenly on top.

  5. Drizzle a bit of olive oil over the toppings and season with salt and pepper.

  6. Bake the pizza in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.

  7. Garnish with fresh basil leaves and serve hot.

A Celebration of Love and Flavor

Isn't this more authentic and Indian than a traditional pizza? This unique creation is not only a feast for the eyes but also a delightful treat for the taste buds. By infusing classic pizza with the rich and diverse flavors of Indian cuisine, I've created a dish that is both familiar and exciting. This Mother's Day, surprise your loved ones with this Indian-style pizza—a celebration of love, tradition, and culinary creativity. Enjoy!
